What changes

### Background On 21 August 2024, AWS announces general availability of the AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region, identified by the code ap-southeast-5. It is AWS's first infrastructure Region in Malaysia and its thirteenth in Asia Pacific. The opening had been announced in March 2023. The Region has three Availability Zones. ### Key facts - Three Availability Zones and the API code ap-southeast-5. - Thirteenth AWS Region in Asia Pacific, after Hong Kong, Hyderabad, Jakarta, Melbourne, Mumbai, Osaka, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo and the Mainland China Regions of Beijing and Ningxia (list taken from the AWS post). - AWS estimates that building and running the Region will add about $12.1 billion (MYR 57.3 billion) to Malaysia's GDP and support an average of more than 3,500 full-time-equivalent jobs at external businesses annually through 2038. - AWS has been present in Malaysia since 2016 and has operated Amazon CloudFront points of presence there since 2017. - AWS also cites local programs, including Green Wira, which trains educators to build sustainability initiatives in schools. ### Why it matters A local Region first answers data-residency and latency needs. For an IT services firm supporting clients in Southeast Asia, it opens in-country hosting options, in a context of regulation increasingly attentive to data location. The economic impacts quoted are AWS's own estimates. A local Region is not enough: choosing a zone also depends on the catalog of available services, often narrower in recent Regions. ### Takeaway Hyperscalers keep multiplying national Regions; Malaysia joins the list in August 2024.
