At Oracle CloudWorld, Oracle launches Database@AWS, declares Database@Google Cloud generally available and expands Database@Azure. Oracle services run on OCI, but inside the data centers of its three competitors.
What changes
- Oracle Database@AWS is launched, Database@Google Cloud becomes generally available (four regions).
- Database@Azure is available in six regions, including France Central, with fifteen more announced.
- Oracle services run on OCI but inside the hyperscalers' data centers, with unified billing and support.
- Existing licenses (BYOL) and consumption commitments can be reused.
### Background On 11 September 2024, at Oracle CloudWorld (Las Vegas), Oracle announces that its database services, running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), are deployed directly inside the data centers of AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. Oracle Database@AWS is launched; Oracle Database@Google Cloud becomes generally available; Oracle Database@Azure, already available, expands. ### Key facts - Database@AWS: Autonomous Database on dedicated infrastructure and Exadata Database Service, with a low-latency network link to AWS applications, purchase through AWS Marketplace and reuse of existing licenses (BYOL). - Database@Azure: Oracle-managed service in six Azure regions (Australia East, Canada Central, East US, France Central, Germany West Central, UK South), with fifteen more announced. - Database@Google Cloud: general availability in four regions (Ashburn, Salt Lake City, London, Frankfurt), with expansion announced. - Unified billing and support with each hyperscaler, and the ability to use existing consumption commitments. ### Why it matters Many large accounts keep critical Oracle databases (Exadata, RAC) that they are reluctant to migrate. This offer brings those databases closer to applications running on another cloud, without rewriting. For an IT services firm, it changes migration patterns: the topic becomes network architecture, licensing and multi-cloud governance, more than porting the database. ### Takeaway Direct competitors host Oracle's database service in their own facilities: a break in multi-cloud logic.
