What changes
- General availability announced on 15 January 2026, first region in Brandenburg.
- More than 90 services, EU-resident operations, can run in isolation.
- Investment of more than 7.8 billion euros; local zones planned in Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal.
- Entity 100% owned by Amazon.com: Cloud Act exposure remains debated.
### Background On 15 January 2026, from Potsdam, AWS announces general availability of the **AWS European Sovereign Cloud**, an independent cloud located entirely within the EU and physically and logically separate from other AWS regions. Its first region is in Brandenburg (Germany): partition `aws-eusc`, region `eusc-de-east-1`. ### Key facts - More than 90 services at launch: AI (including Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker), compute, containers, databases, networking, security, storage. - Operated exclusively by EU residents, with no operational control outside the EU; metadata kept in the EU; able to keep running if the link with the rest of the world is cut. - Investment of more than 7.8 billion euros in Germany, about 2,800 full-time-equivalent jobs per year and 17.2 billion euros of contribution to German GDP, according to AWS. - Expansion planned through sovereign local zones in Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal. - First customers cited: EWE AG, Medizinische Universität Lausitz – Carl Thiem and Sanoma Learning; launch partners including Accenture, Atos, Capgemini, Deloitte, Kyndryl, NVIDIA and SAP; ISO/IEC 27001, SOC and BSI C5 attestations. ### Why it matters The catalog is broad (more than 90 services), the separation is complete and the governance dedicated. But the entity remains 100% owned by Amazon.com, and several practitioners point out that the Cloud Act and FISA allow data held by subsidiaries to be demanded. Regulated CIOs will have to weigh this service level against SecNumCloud-qualified or European offers. ### Takeaway In January 2026 AWS launches its European sovereign region, without lifting the question of US ownership.
