Industry 5.0: the Commission publishes a pilot indicators study

2025-02-10 · Publisher : Commission européenne (DG R&I) · Domain : Industry 4.0 & 5.0

DG Research and Innovation publishes a first mapping of indicators to measure Industry 5.0 (human-centricity, sustainability, resilience), tested on two ecosystems: automotive and energy-intensive industries.

What changes

  • First inventory of available indicators for a future Industry 5.0 measurement framework.
  • Tests on automotive and energy-intensive industries.
  • Three pillars measured: human-centricity, sustainability, resilience.
  • A prototype Industry 5.0 assessment tool followed in March 2026, shown to the community of practice.

### What changes On 10 February 2025, the European Commission's Directorate-General for Research and Innovation published an **Industry 5.0 pilot indicators study**. Its aim: a first inventory of available indicators for a future measurement framework, tested on two industrial ecosystems. ### Key features - Ecosystems tested: **automotive** and **energy-intensive industries**. - Grid aligned with the three Industry 5.0 pillars defined by the Commission: **human-centricity** (worker wellbeing, skills, empowerment), **sustainability** (circular use of resources, planetary boundaries) and **resilience** (capacity to withstand global shocks). - Along the same lines, a prototype Industry 5.0 learning and assessment tool was shown to the community of practice in March 2026. ### Why it matters Until now, Industry 5.0 remained a concept for lack of measurement. Shared indicators make it possible to compare sites, steer projects beyond productivity alone (ergonomics, skills, circularity) and, eventually, direct EU funding. For industrial management, it is a chance to complement classic KPIs with human and resilience measures. ### Key takeaway The Commission is starting to equip Industry 5.0 with tools: what can be measured can be funded, compared and managed.
