ISO 10218:2025: first major revision of industrial robot safety since 2011

2025-02-17 · Publisher : ISO / A3 · Domain : Industry 4.0 & 5.0

After nearly eight years of work, parts 1 and 2 of ISO 10218, the flagship industrial robot safety standard, are revised: explicit functional safety requirements, collaborative robotics folded in (ex-ISO/TS 15066) and cybersecurity requirements.

What changes

  • First major revision since 2011.
  • Functional safety requirements made explicit rather than implied.
  • Collaborative applications (former ISO/TS 15066) and end-effectors (TR 20218-1 and -2) folded in.
  • New robot classifications with matching requirements and test methods.
  • Cybersecurity requirements related to robot safety.

### Background On 17 February 2025, the Association for Advancing Automation (A3) announced publication of the revised **ISO 10218**, the global flagship standard for industrial robot safety. It is its first major revision since 2011, after nearly eight years of work. ### Key features - **Part 1**: safety requirements for industrial robots (manufacturers). - **Part 2**: requirements for robot applications and robot cells (integrators). - **Functional safety** requirements made explicit, making compliance easier to demonstrate. - **Collaborative application** requirements, previously in ISO/TS 15066, folded in, along with guidance on manual load/unload and end-effectors (TR 20218-1 and -2). - New **robot classifications** with matching requirements and test methods. - **Cybersecurity requirements** related to robot safety. ### Why it matters For integrators and engineering offices designing robot cells, Part 2 is the everyday working document: risk assessment, choice of safeguards, validation of safety functions. Bringing cobots and classic robots into one reference simplifies mixed projects. Cybersecurity entering a machine safety standard reflects a reality: an attack on the controller can now compromise operator safety. ### Key takeaway The new ISO 10218 becomes the basis for future robotic risk assessments and makes cybersecurity part of machine safety.
