Intuitive receives FDA 510(k) clearance for da Vinci 5, the fifth generation of its surgical robot, which introduces force feedback. It is first offered to a small number of US customers.
What changes
- FDA 510(k) clearance for the fifth-generation da Vinci.
- Force feedback: surgeons feel the forces applied to tissue.
- Up to 43% less force on tissue in preclinical trials.
- More than 10,000 times the computing power of da Vinci Xi.
- Limited launch with a few US customers before a wider rollout.
### Background On March 14, 2024, Intuitive announced FDA 510(k) clearance for da Vinci 5, the fifth generation of its multiport robotic surgery system. It joins the da Vinci X, Xi and SP and the Ion platform. The headline feature is Force Feedback: optional instruments measure the forces applied to tissue and let the surgeon feel them. ### Specifications - Force Feedback: up to 43% less force on tissue in preclinical trials. - More than 10,000 times the computing power of da Vinci Xi. - New 3D display, vibration and tremor control, integrated insufflation and electrosurgical unit. - Redesigned adjustable console, usable fully upright. ### Why it matters The surgical robotics leader renews its platform after more than a decade of development. Force feedback, missing until now, answers a long-standing criticism of surgical robots and adds a new data stream to surgical data science. ### Key takeaways Intuitive opts for a cautious launch: da Vinci 5 first goes to a small number of US customers with mature robotic programs, before a broader rollout in the US and worldwide.
