Korea's Rainbow Robotics unveils the RB-Y1, a mobile manipulator with two 7-DOF arms on a wheeled base. Designed for embodied AI, it becomes a research platform adopted by several US universities.

What changes

  • Two 7-DOF humanoid arms on a fast wheeled base.
  • A 6-axis torso adjusts body height to stay stable.
  • The robot explicitly targets the generative AI era.
  • In May 2025, omnidirectional wheels and a development kit were added.

### Background Rainbow Robotics, spun out of the KAIST lab that created HUBO, unveiled the RB-Y1, a "semi-humanoid" robot: a two-armed upper body mounted on a wheeled base. The Robot Report published its specifications on April 7, 2024; Rainbow Robotics dates its public debut to March 2024. The exact day of the first presentation is therefore not established. ### Specifications | Item | Value | |---|---| | Arms | 2 × 7 degrees of freedom | | Torso | 6 axes, 20 degrees of freedom in total | | Dimensions | 600 × 690 × 1,400 mm | | Weight | 131 kg | | Max speed | 2,500 mm/s | | Payload per arm | 3 kg | Launch demonstrations were teleoperated: full autonomy remains a goal that Rainbow plans to reach with AI models. ### Why it matters The RB-Y1 is Korea's first bimanual mobile manipulator built for embodied AI. In May 2025, at ICRA, Rainbow added omnidirectional wheels and a development kit; by then the robot was used by MIT, UC Berkeley, the University of Washington and Georgia Tech. ### Key takeaways The RB-Y1 is Rainbow Robotics' flagship robot at the time Samsung becomes its largest shareholder, in late 2024.
