Phoenix Generation 7 cuts the time needed to automate a new task from weeks to under 24 hours, with miniaturised hydraulics and better sensors.
What changes
- New task automation in under 24 hours instead of weeks (50× faster).
- Greater range of motion at the wrist, hand and elbow.
- Miniaturised hydraulics: less weight, power draw and complexity.
- Better vision and tactile sensing for higher-fidelity training data.
### Background On 25 April 2024, Canadian company Sanctuary AI (Vancouver) unveiled the seventh generation of its Phoenix robot, less than 12 months after Generation 6. The headline claim: the time needed to automate a new task drops from weeks to under 24 hours, a 50-fold speed-up according to the company. Its AI control system, Carbon, is upgraded to capture behavioural data better. Geordie Rose, then CEO, said: "With Generation 7, we have a system that we believe is the most closely analogous to a person of any available." ### Specifications | Item | Detail | |---|---| | New task | Automated in under 24 h | | Joints | Greater range of motion at wrist, hand and elbow | | Actuators | Miniaturised hydraulics | | AI | Carbon control system | ### Why it matters Sanctuary bets on highly dexterous hydraulic hands rather than on locomotion. This generation mainly aims to produce high-quality training data for its models. ### Key takeaway Industrial partner cited at the time: automotive supplier Magna.
