Figure AI unveils its second generation: 16-DoF hands, triple the onboard compute, a torso-integrated battery and voice conversation through models trained with OpenAI.
What changes
- 16-DoF hands and a 25 kg payload.
- Three times the onboard compute and AI inference of Figure 01.
- Torso-integrated battery with 50% more capacity.
- Six RGB cameras and voice conversation through models trained with OpenAI.
- Industrial trials at BMW Spartanburg (South Carolina).
### Background On 6 August 2024, Figure AI unveiled Figure 02, its second-generation humanoid, six months after a $675 million raise. The robot drops Figure 01's exposed cabling and integrates its battery into the torso. The most visible novelty is conversation: through microphones and speakers connected to AI models trained in partnership with OpenAI, Figure 02 can talk and take voice instructions. The OpenAI partnership would end about a year later, with Figure then building its own models. ### Specifications | Item | Detail | |---|---| | Hands | 16 degrees of freedom | | Payload | 25 kg | | Battery | Torso-integrated, +50% capacity vs Figure 01 | | Compute | 3× Figure 01 | | Vision | 6 RGB cameras | ### Why it matters Figure 02 is Figure's first robot tested in a real factory: BMW's Spartanburg plant, where it showed it could operate in an industrial environment and learn basic tasks. ### Key takeaway According to Figure, Figure 02 then contributed to the assembly of 30,000 cars at BMW, before being replaced by Figure 03.
