1X World Model

2024-09-17 · Publisher : 1X · Domain : Robotics

1X unveils a world model that acts as a virtual simulator for its robots: from one image sequence it imagines several futures depending on proposed actions, to evaluate policies without a physical robot.

What changes

  • The model predicts how a scene unfolds given the robot's action.
  • It handles rigid bodies, drops, deformable and articulated objects.
  • Its first use is reproducible policy evaluation.
  • 1X releases a dataset and launches an open challenge.

### What changes On September 17, 2024, 1X, maker of the NEO humanoid, unveiled its "1X World Model". It is a generative video model trained to act as a virtual simulator: from the same starting frames, it imagines several possible futures depending on the actions proposed to the robot. ### Specifications - **Predictions**: rigid-body interactions, effects of dropping objects, partial observability, deformable objects (curtains, laundry) and articulated objects (doors, drawers, chairs), according to 1X. - **Main use**: evaluation. 1X explains that a model trained on 1,000 tasks is very hard to compare with its predecessor, and that real-world performance degrades as the environment changes (lighting, background). - **Openness**: release of a dataset and a public challenge to spur world-model research. ### Why it matters The world model becomes a measuring tool: instead of replaying every experiment on physical robots, policies are compared in a simulated, reproducible environment. NVIDIA (Cosmos), Meta (V-JEPA 2) and many others followed this path in 2025 and 2026. ### Key takeaway 1X is one of the first humanoid makers to put a world model at the heart of its development pipeline.
