Boston Dynamics releases version 5.0 of Spot and its Orbit fleet software: AI-driven anomaly detection, panoramic site views and over-the-air updates for industrial inspection.
What changes
- Orbit uses AI to detect debris, leaks and corrosion without manual image review.
- Site View: a 360° photographic record of the site, refreshed by Spot.
- Over-the-air updates for the robot and payloads from Orbit.
- Multi-site fleet management and automatic face blurring.
### Background On May 20, 2025, Boston Dynamics released version 5.0 of Spot and Orbit, its fleet management software. The quadruped, sold mainly for industrial site inspection, gains an AI layer that automatically analyzes the images it collects on patrol. Operators no longer have to review every photo: the system flags anomalies itself. ### Specifications - AI visual inspection (AIVI): debris, spills, corrosion; answers as yes/no, numeric readings, percentages or descriptive text. - Site View: 360° panoramic images captured by Spot to track site conditions over time and investigate past events. - Over-the-air updates: Orbit bundles robot and payload software into a package deployed without on-site intervention. - Centralized multi-site management, unified dashboards, automatic face blurring and role-based permissions. - Orbit can run as a virtual machine (VMware, Hyper-V, Azure). ### Why it matters Spot's value is shifting from hardware to software: the robot becomes a mobile sensor whose data is interpreted by AI. Version 5.1 in January 2026 extends this with the Spot Cam 2 camera and autonomous door opening. ### Key takeaways Orbit 5.0 turns autonomous inspection into a software service, as Boston Dynamics accelerates its industrial sales.
