1X unveils NEO's new hands: 25 tendon-driven degrees of freedom, fully force-controlled, IP68 waterproof and tested beyond 2 million cycles, with 10,000 hands to be produced in 2026.

What changes

  • 25 degrees of freedom: 22 in the fingers and palm, 3 at the wrist.
  • Tendon drive (1X Tendon Drive), all axes force-controlled and back-drivable.
  • IP68 waterproof, food-safe materials.
  • Reliability shown beyond 2 million cycles under high loads.
  • Goal: 10,000 hands produced in-house in 2026.

### Background On 9 July 2026, 1X unveiled the new hand of its NEO home humanoid. It has 25 degrees of freedom, versus 22 announced when pre-orders opened in October 2025. 1X claims near-human dexterity, strength, safety and reliability. All axes are force-controlled and fully back-drivable, enabling safer contact with objects and people. Tactile sensors measure normal force, contact location and shear. ### Specifications | Item | Detail | |---|---| | Degrees of freedom | 25 (22 fingers and palm + 3 wrist) | | Drive | Tendons, 5:1 to 15:1 ratios | | Accuracy | ±0.2 mm | | Peak torques | 3.5 N·m (thumb), 2.6 N·m (finger), 17.75 N·m (wrist) | | Fingertip force | Up to 45 N | | Protection | IP68, food-safe materials | | Endurance | More than 2 million cycles | ### Why it matters For a home robot, the hand drives most tasks: dishes, laundry, tidying. Waterproofing and endurance address the constraints of a real kitchen. ### Key takeaway 1X plans to build 10,000 hands in 2026, in-house, with full end-of-line testing.
