Italy's Generative Bionics, an IIT spin-off, launches GENE.01, a humanoid covered in full-body tactile skin for safe collaboration with humans; first deployment planned with Fincantieri.

What changes

  • Full-body distributed tactile skin: touch, temperature, proximity and force.
  • Learning by physical demonstration: the robot can be guided by hand to show it a task.
  • First industrial deployment planned with shipbuilder Fincantieri, for welding.
  • Robot model released as open source (PyPI, conda-forge, ROS).

### What changes On 20 July 2026, Generative Bionics, a Genoa start-up spun out of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in 2024, officially presented GENE.01 as a complete humanoid platform; the date used here (21 July 2026) is that of The Robot Report's verified coverage. According to the press, the robot had already been shown at CES in January 2026. Its distinguishing feature: a tactile skin across the whole body that senses touch, temperature, proximity and force. It is meant to enable safer collaboration and learning by physical demonstration. ### Specifications | Item | Detail | |---|---| | Sensors | Full-body tactile skin (touch, temperature, proximity, force) | | Learning | Demonstration by physical guidance | | First customer | Fincantieri (shipyard welding) | | Software | Robot model released as open source (PyPI, conda-forge, ROS) | | Funding | €70 million raised in late 2025 | Generative Bionics has published neither height, weight nor degrees of freedom. ### Why it matters CEO Daniele Pucci stresses the platform approach: "Unlike other one-size-fits-all humanoids, Gene.01 is a scalable platform." Italy thus joins the European race. ### Key takeaway GENE.01 made its US debut at AMD Advancing AI 2026.
